For those who want to become consultants, the competition is fierce. Many now pursue higher degrees in research, such as a Doctorate of Medicine, which is a thesis based award that requires at least two years of full-time work; or a PhD which requires at least three years of full time research. It can take anywhere from seven to ten years to go from medical school graduation to becoming an experienced consultant.
